I’ve always sought out repetitive patterns in much of my photography, and on my visit to this yacht club it seemed like every time I turned around I was faced with amazing photographic opportunities of this nature. Everything, and I mean everything, at the San Diego Yacht Club is in absolute perfect order! There is great pride there and it is apparent from the moment you enter the front gates by how the boats are arranged both on and off the water, to the trophy cases (of which there are many) and the daily flag handling rituals. To me, “Little Kin” is just another way of saying junior, and this image is just a small capture of the many junior sailboats that take residence at this club. These boats, in essence, are the “Little Kin” to their larger brothers and sisters. I hope you enjoy this image as much as I did in the creation of it... Most of my imagery is not staged whatsoever… however; I will admit that my vision of portraying the essential “Electric Wood” material of this instrument required it. I’ve always found these types of guitars so artistic to me in more ways than just musically. My vision on this image was to capture the essence of the wood grain and the lines of the body. Capturing the lines was a fairly easy thing to accomplish due to the white edging against the darker wood grain itself; and I could have done that in the studio where this guitar lives for that matter. The difficult part was portraying my vision of how this wood grain guitar was born to begin with. After fussing with several ideas that were not coming together properly, I decided to just lean it up on a tree; that is, after all, where it came from, right? I love the way the neck of the guitar seems to be almost “growing” out of the tree itself, and the reflections of the trees and sky in the gloss finish of the guitar help to bring that environment full-circle, don’t you think? Crossing Darkness When I was working on my study of Denver’s Union Station I had taken note of the Millennium Bridge nearby and knew that I would be back to study this as well. It is right around the corner from Union Station and has also undergone some extensive renovation as of the summer of 2014. I have always loved cable-stayed bridges because of the fact that the cables and support system itself is serving a purpose, but done so in a way that is also beautiful. The mast of the Millennium Bridge is right next to a building that is also beautiful in its own architectural right. When I was approaching the bridge for the first time to study my angles, this was one I took special note of. I did not capture the image right then, but instead took my time to walk the area and study all the possibilities. I worked a few hours before returning to this vantage point, and after all of that, it turned out that it was my favorite after all. Funny how that works out! I really love the way these two elements are “Crossing Darkness” almost as if two sailboats crossing paths in the middle of the night. However, I think that in certain situations they can be quite stunning actually; this is one such example in my minds eye. I was downtown Denver shooting the Millennium Bridge nearby (two images titled “Crossing Darkness” and “Leaning Into Darkness”) when I paused for a bit to study the surrounding area and noticed this crane so bold and bright against the night sky. I was at a great vantage point for the shot, so I set-up and captured it. I only snapped two images of this crane before moving back to what I was previously working on. I really didn’t think much more of it until I got home and began the long task of going through all the images of the day. When I ran across this one I literally had forgotten I even took the images. It quickly became one of my 3 favorite shots of the day. I am hoping that my vision of “Constructing Darkness” might encourage you to look at cranes a bit differently and see them in a more glamorous way perhaps. Its name is both derived from the chaotic architecture by Daniel Libeskind as well as how I happened upon the location itself that early morning (or late night, depending on how you look at it). Sometimes good things fall into your lap so long as you don’t stop looking. Having not scouted this location prior, I spent about an hour walking around while my camera and tripod sat in the car patiently waiting and hoping to get to work. I found several angles that spoke to me, so I grabbed my equipment and got busy gathering some light through the lens. Luckily, during these winter months the daylight comes late, providing me the extra time needed to capture all the images I had in my vision. The only problem is that by the time I left I was having to deal with rush-hour traffic all the way back home, which is not easy for someone accustomed to working from home. If you have not been here, please make a point in visiting this part of downtown Denver, as this truly is a remarkable structure to see in person. I am amazed at the vast overhangs this building has and how they don’t just fall to the ground - impressive to say the least. A building that contains art is an art piece itself. It has always amazed me at how exact and precise things in nature can be, especially when it comes to fauna. The way the leaves on this palm frond spiral outward from a tiny point in the center is the basis of the namesake of this photograph... “Centrifugence”. While I may not understand complex math, I do know that the precision in which palm fronds grow is nothing less than mathematic. From the very first time I saw it when I moved here in 1998, I had always wondered about the history of it. I’ve since learned that the Ice House building was once a creamery and then became a very large cold-storage facility afterwards. It has now been converted into upscale residential lofts (that must be a nice place to live I bet). What struck me the most about this were the shapes of the two prominent elements that are seen in this image and how unique it is to have the water tank right next to the smoke stack such as it is. When I was at Union Station, right next to this building working on some other imagery, I made sure to pay attention to the increasing morning light. I knew I wanted to capture this in a low-light situation looking east so that I could capture only the silhouettes of the two elements and nothing more. They are so striking like this and the shapes alone are so powerful to me. I had to break down from what I was working on and hustle to another location and quickly set-up for this capture as I noticed the light was increasing a bit faster than I had anticipated and almost missed my chance. I'm so glad I was nearby and could get set-up quickly enough to capture this image. It makes me proud to live in a city that is very much aware of its history and does all it can to maintain that history... it truly makes for some wonderful imagery. This is one of those moments for me. When I was in historic downtown Littleton, Colorado walking through an alleyway to get to an area I knew I wanted to photograph, I was thinking about loved ones past and at that very moment I walked right by this hand print on the brick wall. It’s as if the loved ones I was thinking about were at that very moment reaching out to me to say “hello”. It really brought chills to me, in a good way of course! I was there in the shade of the alley, and because of that had plenty of time to find the right lens and aperture combination to really portray what it was that I was feeling emotionally. I was not rushed by fading or increasing light and was given all the time in the world to really just hang out and have a moment with the loved ones that were reaching out to me. I feel that I was truly “Touched" by an angel in the making of this image. I hope this image moves you as much as it does me. The same goes for areas of shadow... there should always be at least a little detail in the shadow areas. Really??? Well, I’ll show them is what I say! I like to break rules in my photography, quite a bit actually. I find that I like blown-out highlights and deep black shadows. Call it bad taste, call it crazy, call it whatever... just don’t forget to call it my style!!! These are my rules and I’m sticking with ‘em. “Street Rules” is all about breaking such rules and portraying my vision in any way I see fit. I hope you agree! While many may overlook the texture part of this image, it is indeed there and the fact that it is such a smooth texture is why it may go unnoticed. However, this image was indeed captured for the shapes and patterns more so than the smooth texture. I absolutely love when things are designed with such a precise goal in mind. The fact that not only were these wine glasses designed to look good in-hand, but they also look great when stacked in this manner. They are “Puzzled” together in a perfect manner that just begs to be captured. While some may only see wine glasses… I see absolute precision in craftsmanship! Can’t you just imagine how good such precision would look when coupled with your favorite Merlot, or a nice Pinot, perhaps? Take that, any perfectly designed piece of furniture ever built. You can’t hold water (or wine) compared to these glasses. When I saw how these wine glasses were so neatly lined up, or “Queued”, it made me realize that this was not by mistake; it was to gain the attention of those of us that might be a bit on the thirsty side after a long day at the office. The person that placed these glasses like this knew exactly what they were doing, even if they didn’t. Not only are they all lined up ready for the next pour, which by the way… happens pretty quickly on a Friday night during happy hour; they are presented on the back of the bar so that every customer is looking at which glass might be the one with their name on it. This is actually a small portion of a glass chandelier that hangs in the lobby area of a local wine bar. I was amazed the first time I saw it, not because of its size, but because of how long it must have taken to pack, ship, un-pack and hang. Keep in mind that this is only a small portion of the amount of glass that is contained within this piece of artwork. The amount of care that must have taken place is a bit staggering actually. I’m glad it was not me that had to deal with it is all I’m saying. Hats off to those that are willing to handle that type of artwork. Sometimes, I think that just by looking at this image the fragile pieces of glass are going to break. I hope this image does not make you as uncomfortable as I am when looking at it. I feel this is synonymous with life in general too; we all need something to connect us with ourselves from time to time, something that allows us to dig deep within ourselves and become connected with our inner being. I’m not talking about something that connects us to other people or things. I’m talking about that certain something that we all have within us but sometimes struggle to dig up that connects us to our feelings… our true feelings. For me, I tend to find this most often in photography, by looking through a lens and blocking out the rest of the nonsense that surrounds me on a day-to-day basis, I’m allowed to really search my soul and portray a vision that only I have in a way that others can possibly feel along with me. This is, after all, my goal in photography… to express feelings through imagery. This particular image means a great deal to me in that it was captured at a time when I was really searching for inner strength - a time of hunting and desperation for what it was that moves me. I was lacking the “Master” link that I needed to pull together my inner being with who I was in the world we all live. This image was captured during the rebirth of my photography and vision through imagery. This, in essence, was when I finally found that “Master” link to allow me to dig deep and find the connection within my inner self. Just a simple bike left out front by a tree and overgrown with ivy. I’m not sure if this was indeed intentional, or if someone just left this there, became lazy, and called it good at that. What’s funny is that I’m sure it looked awful until the ivy began to cover it… then it began to look more and more like art as time continued to pass. Regardless, I felt somehow removed from my surroundings when I set up to capture this image. It felt as if I had somehow been removed from the little downtown area and placed deep in the woods down some old overgrown road and next to a dilapidated house. I allowed the tunnel-vision to kick in and I became one with only the bike and ivy at my feet. Simple I know, but strange how the simplest of things are sometimes the ones with the most powerful memories. I hope this image moves you in a similar way, and even if only for a moment, removes you from your surroundings of the hustle and bustle.
